Howard A. Newman, a candidate for assemblyman on the Independent Democratic ticket for the Ninth Assembly District of Manhattan, spoke at an open meeting last night. Newman was nominated by Gilbert Patten, author of the Frank Merriwell series under the pen-name of Burt L. Standish. He is thirty years of age and is a graduate of Columbia University and Columbia Law School. He has been practicing in New York City since 1928. This is the first time he is running for public office.
