A joint delegation of Zionist and non-Zionist leaders called on Prime Minister Joseph V. Chifly today at Canberra and urged him to transmit to the British Government a plea for the release of all Jews detained in recent raids in Palestine and implementation of the recommendations of the Anglo-American inquiry committee.
Other Zionists and non-Zionists here are engaged in a bitter dispute arising from a statement earlier in the week by Sir Isaac Isaacs, one-time Governor-General of Australia, in which he supported the actions of the British authorities in Palestine and said that many Australian Jews believe that political Zionism is a contributing factor to the disorders in Palestine.
A meeting here last night, which called on the British Government to carry out the inquiry committee’s recommendation, is featured in today’s papers, with emphasis on the attacks on Sir Isaac, during which one speaker said that “all Jews who disassociate themselves from the Zionist movement are quislings.”
