The World Association of Austrian Jews issued a special statement today which emphasized that the Government of Austria has failed to pass any legislation to indemnify victims of the Nazi regime in Austria despite repeated assurances it would do so.
The association, declaring it spoke for 75,000 Austrian Jews surviving from a pre-Hitler Jewish community of 200,000, said that the sum of $35,000,000 set aside by Austria to compensate all victims of Nazism, including the Jews, was inadequate. The statement noted that property losses of the Jewish community alone amounted to $1,000,000,000.
(In Vienna, Dr. Nahum Goldmann reported at a public meeting last night on the results of his talks with Chancellor Julius Raab and Vice-Chancellor Bruno Pitterman. He said the two Government leaders promised him to take definite steps concerning restitution for Jewish victims of the Austrian Nazi regime. Asserting there was foundation for hopes that Austria would act on the issue. Dr. Goldmann added that if the current Parliament failed to enact such laws, world Jewry would regard such inaction as constituting a lack of good will.)
