Chancellor Schuschnigg today was publicly on record as determined that the Austrian government which he heads shall never interpose difficulties in the way of religious groups in Austria.
At the same time, the government continued its policy of eliminating officials of the Jewish faith and replacing them by non-Jews. Professor Maximilian Sternberg was suddenly put on the pension list and retired from his post at the Vienna Hospital. He was replaced by a non-Jew. Jews on the list of candidates for the position were completely overlooked in the selection and their qualifications disregarded.
The Chancellor’s statement was made Saturday in the course of an address at Mariazell.
“The government will never make confessional difficulties,” Dr. Schuschnigg declared.
The Austrian Nazi press, which had been officially prohibited, reappeared today, the papers bearing new names. The Deutsche Zukunft, a new paper, made its appearance with several columns filled with inciting matter against the Jews.
