The cadastral survey and valuation of Palestine will be carried out by units either of villages or settlements and the advantages therefrom should begin to accrue on the completion of the work in each unit. Colonial Secretary Amery declared in the House of Commons yesterday in reply to a question by Col. Josiah Wedgwood.
Col. Wedgwood also asked the Colonial Secretary what steps are being taken to protect the rights of the Crown against claims based on doubtful titles over vacant or common lands.
No steps in this direction were considered necessary, Col. Amery replied.
The question whether the Beisan land settlement is expected to place any land now unused or undesired at the disposal of the Jewish emigrants for development was also put by Col. Wedgwood.
Mr. Amery in his reply said that the Beisan land settlement was in execution of the agreement made in 1921 with the existing Arab cultivators. The settlement was still proceeding and he was not at present in a position to say whether any land in that part of Palestine would on completion of the settlement be found to be surplus. Mr. Amery said that he hoped it might be possible to find some surplus land.
The golden jubilee of the rabbinate of Dr. H. Pereira Mendes, rabbi emeritus of the Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue. Seventieth Street and Central Park West, New York, will be celebrated at the Hotel St. Regis on Sunday afternoon, June 5. Dr. Mendes, who has been living recently in San Diego, Cal., will return to New York for the celebration.
