Sensational reports that Mayor Heinrich Sahm of Berlin has been summoned to appear before a Nazi Party court on charges of patronizing Jewish stores were not denied tonight by the Mayor himself nor by party officials.
While refusing to confirm the report, the Mayor and officials of the National Socialist Party likewise refused to deny them.
“I am not in a position to make any statement,” Mayor Sahm said.
The discovery of the purchase was made by a vigilant Nazi agent working as a clerk in the bank handling the Mayor’s personal account.
It was clear tonight that either the Mayor or his wife had shopped in two Jewish stores paying for the purchases with bank checks.
When the checks were presented to the bank for payment, the Nazi agent denounced Burgomaster Sahm to the Nazi Party.
Mayor Sahm became affiliated with the Nazi movement only recently, joining the party in 1932.
The date of the trial could not be learned.
It was recalled here that last June Mayor Sahm was reported about to be removed and replaced by Julius Lippert, Nazi district commissioner for Berlin, apparently because his loyalty to the Nazi Party was in question.
