The West German Cabinet met today to discuss the issue of the work by West German scientists on advanced weapons systems in Egypt. The meeting took place under the chairmanship of Vice-Chancellor Ludwig Erhard in the absence of Chancellor Konrad Adenauer, who is vacationing in Italy.
After the meeting, State Secretary Gunther von Hase said it had always been the policy of the Federal Government to persuade German citizens in tension-affected areas whose activities could increase political tensions in those areas to return home and that the Government would continue its efforts in that direction in the current situation.
At the same time he stated that the Government had no evidence that West Germans were participating in the development and production in Egypt of atomic, bacterial and chemical weapons, but that if they were, the Government expressed its condemnation. He added that the Government planned to consider whether such “incidents” could be prevented by further legal or administrative measures.
