Week-day religious education will become operative in nine public school buildings in five school districts of Boston beginning October 1, it was announced here today. Children will be dismissed for one hour a week for religious instruction only upon receipt by the principal of the school of an application signed by the parent.
Jewish groups fought the proposal when it first came up about a year ago. Representatives of the Jewish community pointed out in their arguments that the Jewish community already has functioning a desirable Jewish religious school system which takes care of the religious needs of Jewish children five days a week. It was felt that the introduction of religious instruction for one hour a week may influence parents of Jewish children to held the attendance of their children at Talmud Torahs and synagogue religious schools in the belief that the religious instruction given once a week under the auspices of the public school would be sufficient.
