A resolution calling for large-scale immigration of European Jews to Palestine pending a decision of the Palestine issue by the United Nations was adopted here last night at a meeting of the Board of Deputies of British Jews.

Reiterating the Board’s earlier condemnations of terrorism in Palestine, the resolution pointed out that the “way to relieve tension in Palestine is to immediately increase facilities for Jewish immigration.” It asked that the number of displaced Jews to be admitted to the country be “commensurats to their urgent needs.

Alex Easterman, chairman of the Board’s committee on Palestine, atated that “only by an act of statesmanship based on human justice” could the government and political violence. He condemned a recent statement of the Anglo-Jewish Association which, he said, justified martial law. He said that Bevin is trying to cause a rite among the Jews of the world and that the A.J.A. statement was assisting him.

Barnett Janner, Labor M.P., also attacked the A.J.A., asserting that the statement gave the impression that the organization represented British Jewry. He warned the A.J.A. “not to places weapons” in the hands of those who seek to destroy “everything that has been built up in Palestine.” The attacks on the A.J.A. were protested by Neville Laski, former president of the Board, who declared that it was “time to stop internecine warfare.” H.A. Goodman, political secretary of the Agades Israel, also called for unity.
