British Jewry today joined the rest of the nation–and the free world–in mourning the loss of Sir Winston Churchill, who died at his home here early this morning.
The Board of Deputies of British Jews stated, in a special message, that the Jewish community of Great Britain “mourns the death of Sir Winston Churchill, foremost defender and champion of freedom, and sends its condolences to Lady Churchill and her family.”
Chief Rabbi Israel Brodie declared in a message to Lady Churchill: “The Jewish congregation in Britain and the Commonwealth join in the universal sorrow on the passing of Sir Winston Churchill, whose leadership, wisdom, humanity and passion for justice and religious faith sustained the hopes and will of countless men and women everywhere. His name will forever be recorded in the annals of human history for blessing and gratitude.”
A message from the Marchioness of Reading, chairman of the British section of the World Jewish Congress, stated: “We deeply mourn the passing of the great champion of freedom and friend of all humanity. We grieve with you and your family.” This message, too, was addressed to Lady Churchill. The Agudath Israel World Organization also sent a message of condolence to the widow of the departed statesman.
