The officers of the Zionist Federation of Great Britain expressed “keen disappointment” today that yesterday’s Middle East debate in Commons had failed to bring from either Prime Minister Sir Anthony Eden or Foreign Secretary Harold Macmillan proposals to redress the arms balance upset by Soviet and Western arms shipments to the Arab states by helping Israel obtain weapons of self-defense. In a statement, the Zionist officers also deplored the government’s refusal to grant Israel a security treaty similar to several recently concluded with Arab states.
In relation to the tension that exists between Israel and the Arab states, the Zionist officers expressed their conviction that the only path to a solution lies through direct talks between the two sides. Such talks, they continued, should not be made dependent upon one-sided concessions by Israel. “They must be based on the principle of sovereignty and territorial integrity of the states concerned and their mutual desire to reach a peaceful settlement,” they concluded.
