The last Jewish horse-cab driver in Budapest has now been deprived of his license by the municipal authorities under the anti-Jewish laws.
Samuel Schoengut, who was the only Jew among the 20 survivors of a by-gone era in transportation, had been one of the capital’s best-known figures. He and his cab had been seen on Budapest streets for 46 years.
Schoengut made several appearances on the screen with his horse and cab and had also been used by Hungarian impressarios to play the part of a cab-driver in several stage productions.
