The Cabinet received a report yesterday enthusiastically urging the creation of a canal linking the Mediterranean with the Dead Sea. The Cabinet will decide whether to go ahead with the plan at its meeting next Sunday.
Prof. Yuval Ne’eman, head of the steering committee which has been studying the project first suggested by Theodor Herzl in “Altneuland,” stressed to the Cabinet the canal’s economic and national importance.
The plan calls for the canal to run from a point south of Deir El Balah in the Gaza Strip across the Negev to a point near Mosada. The difference in height between the Mediterranean and the Dead Sea, some 400 yards, would help create an artificial waterfall which would be used to manufacture power.
