The Canadian Jewish Congress protested today plans of the Toronto City administration to hold the next municipal elections on a Saturday in November.
Irving Oelbaum, CJC vice president and Toronto community leader, in his protest, pointed out that observant Jews would be barred, by their religious scruples, from casting a ballot on the Sabbath. Also, he noted, observant Jews could not serve as poll watchers or either aid a candidate or run for office in a Sabbath balloting.
