Chief Rabbi Joseph Kaplan of France conferred today with Premier Georges Pompidou on what was believed to be an unsuccessful effort to obtain compensation for the Jewish community for community buildings and synagogues abandoned in Algeria.
The property, since taken over by Premier Ben Bella’s regime, is estimated to be worth several million dollars. It includes community centers, schools and hospitals as well as synagogues. The Premier contended that if compensation was paid to Jews, similar compensation would be sought and have to be provided for other religious communities, such as the Catholics and the various Protestant churches.
