With anti-Semitic students rioting to force segregation of Jews in the left side of lecture rooms, the following exchange occurred in one classroom in Wilno University:

Prof. Rudnicki, after Jewish students had been attacked, asked Nationalist students why they did not leave the Jews alone.

“Because we are Christians,” a chorus of voices replied.

“If Christ had been alive today,” the professor returned, “he would have taken his seat with the Jews on the left side of the lecture room.”
