The attitude of Winston Churchill towards the formation of a Jewish Army was made public here today in a message addressed in behalf of the British Prime Minister to the New Zionist Organization of America by Sir Anthony Rumbold of the British Embassy in Washington.
The letter, which came as a reply to a communication sent by the NZO to Churchill during his stay in the United States, reads: “Your message raises the question of the recruitment of Jews for military service. You will be aware that certain proposals which were under consideration had to be dropped because the necessary equipment was not available. But this does not mean that there is no opportunity for the Jews to serve; on the contrary an active recruiting campaign is being conducted by the Jewish Agency among the Jews in Palestine, the results of which are awaited with interest. The entry of the United States into the war will of course also provide American Jews with the possibility of serving the common cause in the armed forces of the United States, and Mr. Churchill is confident that they will do so with courage and determination.”
