Premier Golda Meir’s Cabinet upheld her refusal yesterday to include on the agenda a proposal by Minister of Tourism Moshe Kol that could have raised a bitter controversy two months before the national elections Kol of the Independent Liberal faction, wanted the Cabinet to discuss a measure that would give all religious trends–Orthodox, Conservative and Reform–equal status in the Jewish State.
Kol handed his agenda item to Cabinet Secretary Michael Arnon two weeks ago. Mrs. Meir asked him to withdraw it on grounds that the Premier alone decides what subjects to include on the Cabinet’s agenda. But Kol raised the matter at yesterday’s Cabinet meeting, contending that the Premier has the authority only to decide when an agenda item will be discussed. He asked for a Cabinet vote. The vote upheld Mrs. Meir’s decision.
