The executive board of the Georgia Council of Churches, representing nine Protestant denominations, voiced a "profound sense of shock and distress" over the bombing of the Atlanta synagogue. "To our Jewish friends and neighbors we would convey our heartfelt sympathy in their loss and our indignation that such a crime could have been committed in our midst," the board said in a statement.
Sen. Herman Talmadge, Democrat of Georgia, termed the bombing "a shocking and unthinkable act" and called for prompt punishment of those guilty whether they are "Communist, white or colored." The Senator pointed out that other bombings had taken place in the South recently and said "It is probable that such actions were done by an organized group."
