The names of the five actors who play the parts of the Rothschild brothers in “The House of Rothschild,” which is now showing at the Astor Theatre, are: George Arliss, Paul Harvey, Noel Madison, Murray Kinnell and Ivan Simpson. Not one of these gentlemen is a Jew. In the female roles Helen Westley, who acts as the mother of these non-Jewish Rothschilds, and Loretta Young, who plays hergranddaughter, are likewise not Jews. Poetic justice would have the role of the anti-Semitic German count played by a Jew, but to spoil a good story I have been told that Boris Karloff, who played that role, is an Englishman.
AT THE NEWS RELL THEATRE
Over at the Embassy, where current events are ground out countless times daily, the feature story is the coronation of Pu Yi, unwilling and frightened Emperor of Manchoukuo. The only thing on the bill of any Jewish interest are the shots showing the unfortunate Millen brothers, who stand accused of a series of crimes ranging from mere petty larceny to murder. The “believe it or not” item shows a new kind of crib for the baby, which is supposed to prevent kidnapers from snatching the youngster from his sleeping place. For adventure there is another episode of Captain Bob Bartlett’s pictorial experiences in the Arctic. All in all, there is more than a quarter’s worth.
