The California Democratic Party’s executive board passed a resolution Saturday night that, while supporting the “aspirations of the Palestinian Arabs to control their own fate,” also calls for direct negotiations among the “parties concerned” and affirms the need for a secure State of Israel.
The resolution was an alternative to a proposed platform amendment calling on the United States to support Palestinian statehood and an international peace conference. The board defeated that proposal by a 4-1 margin.
Still, both pro-Israel and pro-Arab groups agree that the serious consideration given the original proposal represents a significant display of pro-Palestinian sentiment among the state’s Democrats.
