Deputy Michael Landau Brutally Attacked in Lobby of Roumanian Parliament by Cuzist Deputies

The lobby of the Roumanian Parliament was the scene last night of a brutal attack upon Deputy Michael Landau, Jewish representative, by anti-Semitic fellow members of Parliament.

The attack upon the Jewish deputy, who is known for his vigorous denunciation of the anti-Semitic movement in Roumania, was apparently in retaliation for his protest against an incident which occurred in Parliament itself involving the anti-Semitic Deputy Robu and another Jewish deputy, Dr. Meyer Ebner.

Dr. Ebner had just concluded an address expressing opposition against the proposed compulsory Roumanization of Jewish names in Bukowina and was descending the platform, when Deputy Robu purposely stretched out his leg, with the result that Deputy Ebner tripped over him.

Deputy Landau protested against this act, calling it a prank worthy of school boys.

Later, when Deputy Landau went out into the lobby he was fallen upon by a Cuzist deputy, named Adam, who beat him up. Adam was joined by Robu, who punched Deputy Landau’s face and broke his glasses.

At one stage of the attack, Deputies Landau and Adam were rolling on the floor of the Parliament. Deputy Landau finally gained the upperhand over his assailant. Robu who attempted for the second time to come to the assistance of Adam was forcibly held back by newspaper men.

The session of Parliament was suspended owing to the attack. When it was resumed the Speaker of the House expressed his regret that the incident had occurred and called upon the Parliamentary Disciplinary Committee to take the matter under its jurisdiction.

The exclusion of Robu and Adam from Parliament for a period of ten days was proposed by the speaker as a disciplinary measure.
