Republicans today joined in sponsorship of the Devany “isms” bill with the introduction by Senator William C. Martin, Syracuse Republican, of a companion measure in the upper House. The bill, now on order of third reading in the Assembly, will come up for final action Monday night. It would bar from the civil service and teaching posts those who advocate overthrow of the Government.

Mr. Martin introduced his bill just two days after Senator A. Spencer Feld, Manhattan Democrat, had introduced a companion measure in the same House. Edward N. Scheiberling, chairman of the American Legion’s legislative committee, hailed Mr. Martin’s action. “Enactment of the Martin-Devany bill,” he declared, “will be the culmination of a long ustained effort by the American Legion in this State to keep off the public payrolls those who are actively engaged in an attempt to destroy the American form of Government.”
