Israel Ambassador Abba Eban met with Secretary of State John Foster Dulles this week-end to discuss Israel’s security problems. It was learned that Secretary Dulles outlined certain tentative proposals and that Mr. Eban gave his government’s initial reactions. It is understood that resumption of the discussions awaits the receipt of the Israel Government’s views.
According to informed quarters, Mr. Eban intimated that the formulations proposed by Mr. Dulles would not in any way meet Israel’s concern over the results of strengthening the Arab states and offering them one-sided military arrangements. Herbert Hoover Jr., Undersecretary of State, and Reuven Shiloah, Israel Minister Plenipotentiary, also participated in the meeting.
Meanwhile, Senator George A. Smathers, of Florida, in a statement to the press, criticized the plans of the U.S. Government “to make new grants of arms to the Arab states.” He said it was like “lighting a match for the fuse to the Middle East power keg.” The Democratic Senator pointed out that “supplying planes, tanks, guns and ammunition seems to be inviting disaster in the Middle East where so many have worked so long and with such great patience for peace and permanent understandings.”
