Reduction of the operating budget from $258,000,000 to $151,000,000 eliminated scheduled expenditures for the permanent resettlement of 175,000 refugees, of whom 100,000 hoped to go to Palestine.
The U.S. and Britain have agreed to pay almost three-fourths of the cost of financing the IRO, provided that the other U.N. members pay the remaining one-quarter. The issue now goes before the General Assembly for final action.
