A final estimate of the budget for the proposed International Refugee Organization published today disclosed the abandonment of practically all hope for the resettlement of displaced Jews during the coming year at least. Reduction of the operating budget from $258,000,000 to $151,000,000 eliminated scheduled expenditures for the permanent resettlement of 175,000 refugees, of whom 100,000 hoped to go to Palestine.
The U.S. and Britain have agreed to pay almost three-fourths of the cost of financing the IRO, provided that the other U.N. members pay the remaining one-quarter. The issue now goes before the General Assembly for final action.
