Israel Ambassador Eliahu Elath replied today to the attack made on Israel earlier this week by the Egyptian delegate to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization.
Mr. Elath told the plenary meeting that Egypt’s refusal to cooperate with Israel in the F.A.O. is a “clear violation of the constitution of the F.A.O. of the United Nations, which in its preamble proclaims that the nations accepting this constitution are determined to promote the common welfare by furthering separate and collective action.” He added that Egypt’s attitude constituted a challenge to the spirit of the Charter of the United Nations.
The Israel Ambassador appealed to the conference and the Council of the F.A.O. to protect the membership rights of Israel. “My government reluctantly reserves the right to propose, if necessary, that the Near East regional headquarters of the F.A.O. be moved to another country where no discrimination by one member of the organization against another member will be tolerated,” he said.
