Secretary of State John Foster Dulles, testifying today before a joint meeting of the Senate committees of foreign relations and armed services, expressed confidence that the program envisioned under the Eisenhower Doctrine in the Middle East would insure greater security to Israel. He laid the danger to Irael more on Soviet than on Arab threats.
Three Democratic Senators urged Mr. Dulles to prepare a White Paper on U.S. foreign relations in the Middle East since he “visited General Naguib in Cairo and gave him a silver-plated pistol.” Senator – ulbright of Arkansas, making the request, said he regarded Mr. Dulles’ policies as “harmful” to the U.S. joining with him in the request for an immediate “White Paper” were Senators Wayne Morse, Oregon and Hubert Humphrey of Minnesota.
Rep. Charles A. Boyle, Illinois Democrat, suggested in a House speech today that President Eisenhower point out to King Saud “the American stand for fair treatment” of all faiths including Judaism when the Saudi Arabian monarch arrives here next week.
“I trust the State Department, in its concern for the anti-Semitic sensibilities of our royal visitor, will not instruct its employes of Jewish faith to stay home from work so as to avoid offending King Saud during his visit,” Congressman Boyle stated. “It would be a national disgrace if American honor was compromised in this instance.”
