An Israeli plane crashed near Lydda airport during a test flight and the test pilot, Aryeh Ostrov, was killed. Cause of the crash, according to reports here, was engine failure. Ostrov warned the Lydda control tower of the engine failure and said he was going to bail out of the stricken plane.
A few seconds after his message, however, the plane crossed the main runway at Lydda at an altitude of several hundred feet and finally crashed about two miles from the airport. Farm workers who witnessed the crash said that Ostrov signalled them just before the plane hit the earth to run away and take shelter.
