There is reason to believe that American might be willing to take over the Mandate for Palestine, declares the London “Evening Standard.”
Rarely has the Fascist state and the Vatican shown such complete unanimity as on the Palestine question, the paper adds. Both the Fascists and the Catholics criticized the British administration and would like the Mandate given to Italy, coveting the Palestine Mandate above all other mandates because it means control of the Holy Places, not those of the Moslems and the Jews, but of the Christians.
“Not all Englishmen, and they are very numerous who desire England to withdraw from Palestine, are in favor of the Mandate being given to Italy. On the contrary, the great majority would be glad to see the responsibility assumed by the United States. We believe that America, which has always been interested in the leadership of Christian churches, might be willing. This would be an excellent solution, although here, too, religious difficulties might arise. Although the British administration has kept an even balance between the various Christian churches, I imagine an American mandate would naturally involve the exaltation of Protestant bodies. Nevertheless, the orthodox church is in a strong position, as Palestine property rights are in its hands,” the “Evening Standard” writes.
