Walter Huppenkothen, former top Gestapo official and onetime commander of the Nazi Security Police and of the SD Security Service, a sort of super-Gestapo, in Cracow and Lublin, has been classified as a “major offender” by the last remaining denazification court in Bavaria.
He was sentenced to certain financial sanctions and to three years in a labor camp, but was released because he is deemed to have served them during a period of postwar internment and pre-trial custody. Also, all labor camps were closed years ago.
Huppenkothen has twice faced a criminal court on charges of having been an accessory to murder in connection with the execution, early in 1945, of outstanding leaders of the anti-Nazi resistance. He was twice acquitted, although the German Supreme Court vacated the first acquittal as legally inadmissible.
