The hardships and degradation suffered by the Jews imprisoned in the Belsen concentration camp were described yesterday at the fiftieth anniversary convention of the Federation of Jewish Women’s Organizations held at the Astor Hotel here.
The effects of starvation on the Nazi victims were described by Maurice Eigen, JDC representative, who recently returned from a four-month tour of Germany. He quoted an eyewitness account of the burning alive of four truckloads of women, who were poured into a rearing pyre.”
Mayor William O’Dwyer praised the women for spearheading a drive for collection of food and medical supplies for the surviving Jews in Europe. Dean Virginia Gildersleave of Barnard College and an American delegate to the San Francisco United Nations Conference, and other speakers urged the American mothers to show a “sense of responsibility” and to cease from “hysterical propaganda” to bring their boys home lest the results of the war be lost.
