A Jewish fighter pilot, M. Isensohn, is the first Jew in the U.S.S.R. to be awarded the new military decoration, Order of Alexander Nevsky, which has been presented to a group of Red Army men who performed exceptionally courageous exploits. The order is named after the Russian Grand Duke Alexander Nevsky who in 1242 defeated the German knights and who is now honored as a national hero.
Isensohn received the award for gallantry on the Stalingrad front where he attacked the enemy under heavy fire, flying just a few feet from the ground. He destroyed enemy installations and returned with important military information.
