Don Fernando de los Rios, the Spanish Minister of Education, who is now on an official visit to Tetuan, in Spanish Morocco, where there is a large population of Spanish Jews, received to-day Mr. Ben Aroch, the President of the local Jewish Community, and expressed to him the regret of the Spanish Government at the injustice done to the Jews by their expulsion from Spain in 1492, and said that he was glad that the new Republic has wiped out this ignominy. Present-day Spain realises the importance of the Jewish contributions to Spanish civilisation, he said, and he hoped that the Jews would now forget the past and would join in common work of developing Spanish culture, in which no distinctions on the ground of religion would be allowed.
