The former counsel to two American presidents charged today that pressures for appeasement of the Arabs were emerging in the United States Government. Myer Feldman, who served as Special Counsel to Presidents Kennedy and Johnson, said the argument was being advanced that the Arab states and their votes at the United Nations were more important to this country than was Israel.
Speaking before the Washington Committee of the Weizmann Institute of Science, Mr. Feldman stressed that “American policy in the Middle East cannot be based upon a belief that Israel will always be strong enough to defend itself against the overwhelming men and materiel poised along its borders.” He urged the Administration to prove to the Russians the futility of arming the Arabs by sending offsetting arms to Israel.
