The struggle against bigotry and intolerance in the United States has a special meaning and urgency in the present period of national emergency, Fred Lazrus Jr., outstanding American Jewish leader, declared last night at a dinner at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel where he was presented with the National Gold Award of the National Conference of Christians and Jews for distinguished service in the field of human relations.
Mr. Lazrus reported that he had observed, on business travels in this country, that there had been “a genuine reduction in group tensions.” He was lauded by Senator Robert A. Taft and Dr. Everett R. Clinchy for his activities in fighting racial prejudice. Rabbi Nathan Perilman of Temple Emanu-El cited Mr. Lazarus’ services to religious and welfare organizations.
