A visiting French Cardinal told leaders of Argentine Jewry that there are no basic objections to the recognition of Israel by the Vatican, only accidental obstacles arising from the Middle East situation and the situation of Christian communities in the Arab states, Jean Cardinal Deanielou of France. advisor to Pope Paul VI, made those remarks during a visit to the DAIA, the central representative body of Argentine Jewry.
Cardinal Deanielou is the highest ranking dignitary of the Roman Catholic Church to visit the DAIA. He was received by its president, Dr. Sion Cohen Imach; Dr. David Kahana, Chief Rabbi of Argentina; and two leading Sephardic rabbis. Aaron Angel and Mordechai Herbst. The Cardinal said that despite his crowded schedule he did not want to leave Argentina without paying his respects to the Jewish community.
