Eight German refugees, all men of military age and all but one of them Jewish, were taken aboard a French submarine from the Italian liner Saturnia some 200 miles off the Azores, it was revealed here.
Bringing his ship into port yesterday afternoon with 750 refugees on board, Captain Antonio Iviani reported that a ninth refugee who had been selected by the submarine’s commander for removal was saved by the pleas of his wife. The captain of the submarine when asked why he was taking only eight of the refugee passengers, said he had no room for more.
The seized Jewish refugees are, according to the HIAS; Victor Stern, Meyer Werner, Kuplik, Schreckinger, Hortner, Weil, Bleiberg.
