A group of prominent French writers, including Jules Romains, Paul Valery and Georges Duhamel, issued a manifesto denouncing the “unprecedented barbarity of the German Army and German authorities in the western Polish provinces annexed to the Reich in violation of international law.” The manifesto protested the “attempt to wipe out a nation which is an indispensable member of the European family.”
