The House of Representatives on Thursday overwhelmingly approved $650 million in emergency military aid to Israel:
Rep. Tim Valentine (D-N.C.) tried unsuccessfully to strip that amount from a $4.1 billion supplemental appropriations bill, failing on a 397-24 vote.
The spending bill, for the fiscal year that began Oct. 1, now goes to the Senate, where final action is expected within a matter of days.
Rep. James Traficant Jr. (D-Ohio) failed to muster the necessary support to gain a recorded vote on three amendments, to pare the $650 million to $400 million, $600 million and $637 million respectively.
Rep. David Obey (D-Wis.), who sponsored the $650 million amendment to the bill, warned, however, that Israel has an obligation to be flexible in considering solutions to the Palestinian problem.
