Approximately 9,000 Jewish knit garment workers in New York and vicinity are expected to be affected by a proposed strike which is to be called this week, it was estimated yesterday by an official of the International Ladies’ Garment Workers’ Union, the parent organization.
Cooperating in the proposed strike, which was announced by the executive board of the I. L. G. W. union at a meeting Tuesday in the Hotel New Yorker, will be the United Textile Workers of America which has jurisdiction over part of the industry.
Altogether some 18,000 knit goods workers will walk out should the strike become an actuality.
The demands of the knit goods workers are for a wage increase of twenty-five to thirty per cent, the thirty-hour week, classification of wage scales and the closed shop.
