Defense Minister Moshe Dayan told the men and women of Israel’s defense forces today that their country’s immediate objective was to convert the present cease-fire into a permanent peace with the Arab world, including that part of the Arab world living within Israel’s borders.
In a message for Rosh Hashana, the Jewish New Year, transmitted through the Chief of Staff, Gen. Itzhak Rabin, Gen. Dayan stressed that, to attain this objective, Israel must hold its new frontiers and deter its enemies from any thought that they could oust and destroy the Israelis by force.
“Israel,” Gen. Dayan said, “is facing a crucial year and the tasks facing her are not easy. In the past, we knew how to guard our frontiers during border incidents. Now, our borders have changed, but there is no doubt we shall keep these as well.”
