General Sir Peter Strickland, the Officer Commanding the British Troops in Egypt, will probably be the next High Commissioner for Palestine in succession to Sir John Chancellor, who is expected to retire at the end of his three year period of office, which comes to an end this summer. This is the belief of the British Colony in Palestine, which sees the promotion of Sir Peter last week from a Lieutenant-General to the rank of a full General as lending support to its belief.
A far more likely candidate than any is Sir Peter Strickland, the “Palestine Bulletin” wrote last week. Most people, remembering Plumer, it said, want a soldier who will not be frightened by threats or stampeded into a course of policy that is not for the benefit of the country.
