The Prussian Academy of Letters which was founded last year, has just held its second election of members. As the Academy is limited by its Constitution to thirty members, there were only five seats available, which were filled by the election of the novelists Alfred Doeblin and Leonhard Frank, the poets, Theodor Daeubler and Alfred Mombert, and the dramatist Fritz von Unruh. Two of these, Alfred Doeblin and Alfred Mombert, are Jews.
Doeblin, who is a doctor practicing in Berlin, is one of the leading novelists in Germany. His most important work is “Mountains, Men and Giants,” which he wrote two years ago. Alfred Mombert is with Daeubler the leader of the cosmic lyric movement in Germany.
The members of the academy previously elected also include several Jews, Ludwig Fulda, Franz Werfel and Arthur Schnitzler.
