Great interest has been aroused by events in the village of Maldur, re-calling the practice of the Russian government in establishing a pale of settlement for Jews.
The village, which formerly belonged to Hungary and is now a part of Roumania, is inhabited mainly by German Catholics. In order to keep the village “pure German,” the inhabitants induced the one Jewish resident in the village to sell his house and move away. After the Jewish resident left, his house was burned down.
Soon after, however another Jewish family moved to the village. The family was asked by the German inhabitants to leave the village, but this request was refused. The community then appealed to the chief of police to expel the Jewish family. The decision of the chief of police is awaited with great interest.
