The Jewish community in Gibraltar, which has been on “the Rock” for 200 years and “is thoroughly integrated” there, is affected by the frontier dispute between Gibraltar and Spain to the same degree that those tensions affect the rest of the population, Sir Joshua Abraham Hassan, Chief Minister of Gibraltar, declared here tonight.
Here for consultation with the Government, Sir Joshua is also active in the leadership of the Gibraltar Jewish community. He made his statement in an interview over the BBC Hebrew Service, a radio broadcast beamed to Israel.
Sir Joshua said there is good cooperation between Gibraltar and Israel. “Close maritime ties have been maintained with Israeli shipping firms for a long time,” he said. “Israeli ships call at Gibralter regularly.” Many Israeli products, he declared, are displayed in Gibraltar shops.
Sir Joshua, the chief member of the Gibraltar Legislature, and Lord Mayor of Gibraltar, is a member of the Nefusot Yehuda Synagogue in Gibraltar and on the managing board of the Hebrew Community of Gibraltar.
