A capacity audience of more than 18,000 Israel bond purchasers accorded tribute to Mrs. Golda Meir, Israel’s Foreign Minister, at a sellout performance this evening at the 12th annual Chanukah Festival for Israel, the high-point of the 1962 drive for Israel bonds in New York City.
The event, which featured a moving eulogy to the late Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt, brought to $11,000,000 the amount of Israel bonds sold in the New York metropolitan area since the beginning of the year. The drive will extend to the end of this month. A second and final performance of the Chanukah festival will be held on Tuesday, January 1.
Mrs. Meir, who was given a standing ovation by the capacity audience, expressed the appreciation of her government to the American people for their friendship and their interest in Israel’s development. She urged continued investment in Israel bonds to make possible the reclamation of Israel’s Negev, the country’s southern desert region which occupies 60 percent of its land area.
