Grand Duke Nikolai Nikolaievitch, second cousin of Czar Nicholas II and commander-in-chief of the Russian armies in the first period of the World War, died Sunday morning at Antibes, France. Death was due to pneumonia. He was 72 years.
The Grand Duke was known for his extreme hatred of Jews. It was during his command of the Russian armies that thousands of Jews living in the western parts of Russia were taken as hostages and exiled to Siberia and other parts of Russia. Many innocent Russian Jews were court martialed on slight suspicions. At a recent meeting of Russian monarchistic emigres, Nikolai Nikolaievitch was proclaimed as their candidate for the Romanoff throne.
