The Greek government stands firmly on the principle of equality for the Jews and will never consent to a restoration of the separate electoral college for Jews, Premier Panayoti Tsaldaris declared today in an interview with Dr. Bessentchi, president of the Greek Zionist Federation.
The Greek Premier denied emphatically, as was reported in the press, that he had assented to the restoration of a separate electoral college in a bargain with the anti-Semitic Venizelist party, in order to insure the re-election of President Alexander Zaimis.
GUARANTEES NOT AFFECTED
Whatever concessions were made, Premier Tsaldaris asserted, were in the interests of peace and did not affect basic constitutional guarantees.
Greek Jewry has always opposed the herding of Jews into a political Ghetto, while the anti-Semitic Venizelist party has insisted that Jews have no business voting with other Greeks. They were particularly incensed because Jewish votes for the government helped keep the Venizelists out of power.
