The five-day biennial convention of the United Synagogue of America, representing 520 Conservative congregations, opened here last night with a report stating that Conservative Judaism has gained 150,000 members during the last two years.
The report was made by Rabbi Bernard Segal, executive director of the organization. He attributed the growth of the Conservative movement to a general resurgence of religion among Jews, especially those who live in the suburbs. He claimed that the Conservative synagogues in this country now have about 1,000,000 members.
Maxwell R. Rabb, adviser to President Eisenhower, told the delegates that “Jews have contributed their talents to the growth of America,” he asserted, “now they must contribute their collective talent to its greatness.” Mr. Raab added that traditional religious values are foremost in meeting attacks from totalitarian ideologies.
