Some 2,500 delegates are scheduled to attend the 46th national convention of Hadassah, which will open at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City on Sunday. The four-day conclave will formulate Hadassah’s American and Israel programs for the next 12 months.
The first session Sunday will feature addresses by Avraham Harman, Israel Ambassador to the United States, and Walter P. Reuther, AFL-CIO vice-president and president of the United Automobile Workers Union.
The largest Zionist organization in the world today, Hadassah spends $9,000,000 a year on its undertakings. In Israel, Hadassah conducts a comprehensive health, education and social welfare program, which includes a hospital network of diagnostic, curative and preventive medical services, health stations, rehabilitation of underprivileged children and youth, vocational education and land redemption programs.
Hadassah’s major medical undertaking in Israel today is completion of the $25,000,000 Hadassah-Hebrew University Medical Center on the outskirts of Jerusalem. The Medical Center–which was dedicated officially on August 3–will consolidate all of Hadassah’s medical facilities in a modern complex of 17 buildings. The Center is slated to begin functioning in 1961.
